Girl Under Glass
IE 7, do I or do I not?

I’m a little skeered, but thinking of downloading Internet Explorer 7. I currently run 6 and don’t see any reason to mess with it, other than the notion of moving up with technology (before the anti-IE folk give me a rash of crap, I *do* have Firefox 2 installed as well, but I don’t particularly like it). I realize more people are using alternative browsers these days, but if you look at your web stats (domain owners), you’ll see the majority are still using IE :P

Actually, the only reason I even have Firefox installed is so I can test new themes to make sure they look spiffy in FF. I’m a huge stickler for cross-browser functionality- none of this “you have to use X browser to view my site” stuff! BAH! You call yourself a web designer?! Ok- let me get off my soap box long enough to ask the question I came here for…

So how is IE7? Those of you that have it- does it suck? Do you recommend I upgrade? I’ve heard all sort of scary complaints about it, but that was in the past. I’m wondering if it’s any better now?

I haveth no idea girl. I’m a loyal Firefox user. You know this. I hate IE and everything about it :) mostly because when I DO have to use it, it always screws up my computer to the point I have to restart. But then again, I could just have a sucky computer. heh ?!

Agggg DAMNIT girl !!! With all of your IE talk you got me to thinking that I’ve NEVER looked at my new URL and design in IE. I know. I know. I broke your most covenanted rule. I’m sorry. But NOW I see that I ain’t lookin so pretty over there. *eyeroll* You know I suck at this. But for YOU, I will TRY to figure out the problems and FIX them. Are you proud ??? Huh ??? I knew you would be.

When you get a hair up your cute ass and wanna design something … I’m your first client. Let me re-phrase. I’m your first PAYING client. Seriously.

    Eeee. I am a Firefox-er. I guess I would say this..if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. LOL

On the design forum I belong to, there has been much kvetching over IE7, that is all I know!

And that being said, I cannot believe you are an IE girl. LOL

Not that there’s anything wrong with that….

I’m a web developer with a focus on doing theming and browser compatibility, and while I’d strongly argue for people to make the switch to Firefox or some other non-IE browser… if you’re that adamant on staying with IE, it would be my preference for you to upgrade to IE7.

I develop for Firefox first, and then cross-browser test. I would say that 98% of the time, IE7 looks fine. IE6, on the other hand, has a much worse track record. I would say that I could probably cut theme development time in almost half if I didn’t have to support IE6.

I decided to take your challenge on checking my domain stats for browsers…. Approximately speaking: 61% Firefox, 26% IE, 7% Safari, Opera 2% and Other Mozilla Based 1%. Of the IE results, approximately 67% used IE7 and 32% use IE6. Personally, I wouldn’t assume that a arbitrary domain owner might have a IE majority, I’d say you’d have to assess the audience of the domain.

The W3’s browser statistics, while I certainly wouldn’t hold authoritative: http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp are interesting to look at… If you look back to January 2005 when IE7 was first introduced… You’ll see that there the two IE versions combined made up about 60% of the market share and Firefox made up 25%. Fast forward to April 2008, combine the two IEs and you get 54% and Firefox has 39%. IE is a whole is losing, not gaining market share.

Hi Nikkiana- you’re right, I shouldn’t have assumed everyone else’s domain stats would be similar to mine. I guess it does depend on the author and his/her audience. Also, thanks for the enlightenment on the overall stats. I knew IE was losing popularity- but didn’t realize it was that much! Poor IE :( heh. I’m gonna upgrade! But I still don’t want to go to the “dark side” just yet. Firefox is just not my bag. Actually, I have more problems with FF producing errors and auto shutting the browser window than I’ve ever had with IE. Maybe it’s just my computer!
