This is where it gets really fun and you’re going to see a big improvement. When you purchase cheap glass vases adding water seems like the most basic addition that you can do, and at it’s root it really is. But the effects that it brings to your vases and to the room are phenomenal. You can add colored water or water with another water base so that it has a thicker syrupy look to it. I have seen people add oil and water. This can be tricky and very messy if you don’t know what you’re doing but if done correctly this can look fabulous inside of your house. If you buy cheap glasses vases adding water and oil (because they don’t mix) can add another dimension to your vases and make it appear to be done by a professional.
But for simplicities sake we’ll stick to just adding basic water. Typically the amount of water you add to your glass vases will depend on what else you are going to do with it. If you’re going to only add water then you typically want to add water so that it flow to twice the height of the solid decoration (rocks for our example) that you have placed at the bottom. If you are going to add more items to them e.g. plants or other decoration then add water either equal to the amount of solid decoration or 1 ½ the height of your solid decoration. You don’t want to buy some cheap glass vases only to have them look like they’re overdone or trying to hard for attention so the correct amount of water is crucial. Play around with different water levels in your glass vases as different layouts will bring the results you are looking for.
This is fairly simple but deserves it’s own explanation. You can certainly buy colored water at many stores, but you should know that this typically isn’t some sort of professionally done colored water and is more often than not just water with food coloring added to it. You can save yourself a lot of money in the long run by simply mixing your own colored water. If you’re going to make your own colored water for your clear glass vases you’ll want to mix about a half a cup of baking soda with a full cup of vinegar into your water. Mix these together very well and then add glycerin and corn starch to the mixture. Once you’ve mixed this let it sit for about five minutes then add the food coloring of your choice.
If you just food coloring to the water then it will settle at the bottom of the clear glass vases eventually and not look correct. Adding the other ingredients helps to add a thicker texture and make it look as though the water is actually the color you selected instead of it looking like the water has something in it. Play around with your colors and see what turns out best for you. If you can find a place that specializes in colored water made for clear glass vases and offer a good price then you may wish to stick with that as it takes away from some of the mess but is considerably more expensive.
